لنفرض أنّك تتحدّث عن أرقام كبيرة باللغة الإنجليزية باستمرار، ستصبح عملية تكرار الكلمات الطويلة مثل "thousand" أمراً متعباً. لذلك يمكنك أن تستخدم إما كلمة "grand" أو حرف "K" اختصاراً.

لكن، انتبه: نستخدم هذين الاختصارين فقط في حال كان الرقم آلافاً صحيحة دون أرقام أخرى كما يلي:

4000: four thousand

أو اختصاراً يمكنك أن تقول four K أو four grand

أما بالنسبة للرقم التالي:

4200: Four thousand and two hundred

لا يمكنك أبداً استخدام الاختصارين السابقين مع هذا الرقم.

اقسم العام إلى قسمين

يمكنك أن تقسم الرقم المعبّر عن السنوات إلى قسمين: القسم الأول مكوّن من الرقمين الأولين والقسم الثاني مكوّن من الرقميين الأخيرين. إليك هذا الرقم: 1972

نقسمه إلى قسمين ونقرأ كل قسم على حدا كما يلي:

19: Nineteen

72: Seventy-two

ليصبح الرقم كما يلي:

1972: Nineteen seventy-two

تذكّر لفظ "oh"

عندما تنتهي السنة بصفر متبوعاً برقم مثل (1805،1906،1707) نلفظ "oh" بدلاً من أن تقول صفر. كما يلي:

1707: Seventeen oh seven

1906: Nineteen oh six

1805: Eighteen oh five

انتبه: لا يمكنك استخدام هذا الطريقة مع السنوات التي تبدأ بـ 20 مثل (2004).

كيف تقول الأعوام الأكبر من 2000؟

تختلف القواعد السابقة عند الانتقال إلى الأعوام الأكبر من 2000. فعلى سبيل المثال العام 2004:

لا يمكنك أن تقول: twenty oh four.

بل نقول الرقم كاملاً: Two thousand and four

تنطبق هذه القاعدة على الأعوام الممتدة من 2001-2010.

لكن، ماذا عن الأعوام التي تلي 2010؟

يمكنك أن تستخدم أياً من الطريقتين السابقتين؛ إما تقسيمها إلى قسمين أو قول الرقم كاملاً.

2012: Twenty twelve

2012: Two thousand and twelve

استخدم "hundred" أو "thousand" في هذه الحالات

عندما تكون السنة تتألّف من أربعة أرقام والرقمين الأخيرين هما "00" يمكنك أن تلفظ الرقمين الأولين ثم تتبعهما بكلمة "hundred" كما يلي:

1500: Fifteen hundred

1200: Twelve hundred

2200: Twenty-two hundred

أما إذا كانت السنة تتألف من أربعة أرقام والأرقام الثلاثة الأخيرة هي "000" فيمكنك قراءة الرقم الأول متبوعاً بكلمة "thousand" كما يلي:

1000: one thousand

2000: two thousand
